Whether Vista is a good operating system or not is up for debate. No matter what the fact remains that many have stayed with XP, for various reasons. If you are one of them and is interested in upgrading to Windows 7 you have a problem. Microsoft has said that it will offer an upgrade license from XP to Windows 7, but it will require a complete reinstall of the operating system. There is a potential solution though.

Some might want to do the complete reinstall since it will minimize the chance of problems, while others would like an upgrade feature that will transfer documents, programs and settings to the new operating system. According to Microsoft this is not possible from XP to Windows 7. Over at betanews.com they have tried a way to get around this. In short, you simply upgrade to a trial version of Vista, but not active, and then within the 30 days upgrade to Windows 7. This has worked with a surprising accuracy, even though it is still just a beta of Windows 7 and there are many years separating XP and 7.
