Intels Patrick Bliemer om 14nm och fokus på smartphones [Intervju]

Ultrabooks är inte en MacBook Air-konkurrent

Ultrabooks har sedan tidigt i sommar varit ett hett diskussionsämne som mötts av minst lika mycket kritik som fascination. Som det ser ut idag kan de flesta med all rätt tycka att det inte är någonting annat än en tunn dator, kanske till och med vara väldigt inspirerad av MacBook Air. Under vår diskussion med Pat Bliemer kom flera intressanta saker upp på tal vissa rykten och spekulationer slogs även sönder.

Vi börjar med det som enligt Intel har varit mer myt än fakta. Under tiden konceptet diskuterades har det rapporterats om att tillverkare varit rädda att ta sig an konceptet. Pat Bliemer ansåg att det mesta som publicerats av media har varit felaktiga rykten. Ultrabook marknaden kommer tveklöst vara liten under 2011 men allt handlar om att bygga upp varumärket, och få folk att förstå sig på konceptet inför nästa år när den verkliga satsningen inleds.

”I wouldn’t say that they’re afraid adopt, I do think the last couple of weeks or months there’s been some misleading articles like large OEM’s cancelling lots of volumes and then a couple of days later there come clarification saying that’s not what they said. Q4 for us, or the fourth quarter 2011 is basically for us to go and get the product into the market and start working with our OEM’s and retail partners predominantly right now, because the main focus for the first half of 2012 will be the consumer market for Ultrabooks to go and get that category established. And getting people to understand that this is kind of a different type of breed.”

Många anser att Ultrabooks inte är någonting speciellt – det är helt enkelt en väldigt tunn dator. Som svar på detta sa han att de har en produktplan som inte bara ska utvecklas på hårdvaran och formfaktorn, utan även sett till mjukvara och funktioner för att få dem att stå ut.

”Exactly, and this is actually one of the challenges but what we have is a roadmap that is not only going to evolve on the hardware side and the formfactor all together with our OEM partners, but also what you see is that we are going to a lot more in terms of software and capabilities that we’re going to make available.[…]But also think about anti-theft technology, identity protection and you know that we have a lot of Intel technologies.”

…men redan 2012 får Ultrabooks ett nytt ansikte, ska inte bara vara en tunn bärbar dator

Så sett till funktionalitet kommer Ultrabooks bli någonting nytt och Windows 8 kommer vara en viktig ingrediens i detta. Vi nämnde att Paul Otellini hade sagt att folk kommer vilja peka på skärmen när Windows 8 är ute med sitt Metro-gränssnitt, och att det måste komma till Ultrabooks. Ultrabooks med touch-skärm bör alltså komma ut i samband med Windows 8. Pat Bliemer säger sig ha sett modeller och konceptidéer från tillverkare med allt från avtagbar skärm likt ASUS Transformer, och även roterbara skärmar men även andra alternativa produkter. Någonting vi tycker låter som ett stort steg mot att få formfaktor att sticka ut både från den traditionella datorn och surfplattan.

”Yeah, now everything is clamshell-based right? But we know, we’ve seen plans from various OEM’s with different types of devices and you named a few options like convertible Tablet-like, Transformer-like.[…]Yeah we will see a whole variety of that coming out once we’re also add touch to the capability with Windows 8. I think it’s pretty exciting, I think this is going to be new to some degree and on the other hand we are going to continue to go and innovate and spend a lot of R&D to go and actually drive it and keep the technology lead as well of course.”

Det här gäller självklart inte gälla precis alla Ultrabooks, men alternativen kommer att finnas och konceptet börjar särskilja sig från både surfplattor och bärbara datorer på allvar.

Pat Bliemer valde själv att jämföra Ultrabooks mot deras CULV-koncept (Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage) som aldrig riktigt fick vind under vingarna. Intel ansåg att det var en bra produkt och att den självklart skulle sälja på marknaden – men i verkligheten blev CULV allt annat än en succé. Misstaget från Intels sida säger han var att de inte marknadsförde CULV, utan bara gav plattformen till sina partners för att ta fram bärbara datorer. Däremot sa han att CULV fick ett bra genomslag på den nordiska marknaden. Att Intel direkt marknadsför Ultrabooks ska alltså vara en pusselbit i receptet för framgång.

Även om CULV sålde bra i Norden, var det allt annat än en succé globalt

”Another interesting aspect particularly for Nordics markets. About two and a half years ago I think, we had this initiative called CULV. We didn’t do much from an Intel point of view for actually go and create the category, we didn’t do programs with retailers and so on, we just thought it’s a great product and it will probably sell itself. We were wrong not promoting it and thinking we would get that momentum but what we saw if anything is that the Nordics market was the fastest one – again adopting that form factor.”

En annan intressant sak om inte bara Ultrabooks utan bärbara generellt är möjligheten med inbyggt 3G-modem. Detta är en funktion som finns i många bärbara inriktade mot den professionella marknaden, men inte riktigt för konsumenter. Pat Bliemer tror att vi framöver kommer att få se sådana lösningar för Ultrabooks, så väl som vanliga bärbara datorer i framtiden. Däremot kommer 3G inte vara aktuellt utan han tror på WiMax och LTE.

”I think it’s one of those things we of course set strategy on WiMax, that is moving to LTE so I do think that’s where you’re going to see the roadmap go to also in terms of wireless connectivity with Ultrabooks going forward. Not as much on the 3G side.[…]I do think that the mobility features, the future on that one is going to be LTE-based and we’ll see developments in products coming out on that in the future.”

Ultrabook är ingen konkurrent till MacBook Air?

Näst på tal kom en fråga vi inte kunde låta bli att ställa, nämligen hur konceptet kommer kunna konkurrera mot Apples MacBook Air. Som det ser ut idag är de båda väldigt lika i formfaktor och utförande, men han säger på en gång att de varken tror att de kommer konkurrera och att Intel inte heller vill göra det.

”Let me first clarify we definitely don’t think that we want to compete, cause at the end of the day the Apple, in the MacBook Air there’s Intel technology.”

MacBook Air och Ultrabooks är inte direkta konkurrenter enligt Intel

Även om Intel inte ser det så, så vill självklart tillverkarna konkurrera mot MacBook Air. Han ser det fortfarande inte som ett bra argument, då Apples användare inte kommer att jämföra en Ultrabook mot MacBook Air. Det är olika produktkategorier och att gå från ett operativsystem till ett annat är ofta ingenting slutanvändare tycker om att göra. Han tror till och med att när antalet formfaktorer som liknade MacBook Air finns på marknaden kan det hjälpa Apple att stärka sin försäljning.

”I see it slightly different. I do think that Apple has such a strong value proposition and the users of Apple that basically look at all other attributes that come with the Apple-brand and I don’t think they are comparing side-to-side. This form factor or this product against the MacBook Air for example. So I would expect, now my expaction is that Apple will continue to do extremely well as they are doing right now. Maybe even because more and more people are going to start looking at this form factor, maybe actually that will help them to lift sales on the MacBook Air. Although of course the price points are different, but then again that’s the same if you look at the normal MacBook versus notebook right? Are they competing with eachother? Well I think Apple has demonstrated year over year that they have a very robust model and they increase sales every quarter.”
