The headline isn’t perhaps the most revolutionizing one that has been written here at NH, but if you take it literally; AMD has given the crown to Intel, things change. Over at Hexus they’ve published a news article where they discuss AMD’s latest moves and the consequences of them. AMD has simply gone for width and lost the depth it was once famous for. We assume the real issue here is that AMD simply doesn’t have the capacity to meet the demand from all markets, desktop and OEM, which are the two which interest us the most. This will hopefully not be repeated with the new 65nm processors as AMD has taken help from the outside for that, but there is still a lack of processors today.

At the same time, AMD has chosen a more economical path instead of the highway of performance which once built AMD’s good reputation among consumers in the early ’00s. There’s disappointment pretty much wherever you turn and even if Hexus has received a short reply from AMD it is hardly a truly convincing one.

Intel hasn’t been perfect with the supply either though, so AMD hasn’t been the only company to let us down, but now at least Intel seems to be up to pace with its Core 2 Duo processors. There is still a big shortage of both Celeron and Sempron and this causes concern among OEM manufacturers at the moment.

What the future will look like and if AMD will be able to reclaim the performance throne is something we will leave up to the psychics to predict. What the reality will be in six month or a year is a very interesting subject and we will return to as soon as possible.
