NVIDIA has launched its latest version of the multi-GPU technology SLI. Over the last couple of months we’ve been hearing a lot of things about NVIDIA’s 3-way SLI technology and it has now finally been officially unveiled. NVIDIA’s 3-way SLI system consists of the nForce 680 SLI chipset paired with three GeForce 8800 GTX/Ultra graphics cards. According to NVIDIA, this will result in a system with up to 2.8 times the performance of a single CPU system. Of course, this only applies to certain applications and under certain circumstances, but with the high definition monitors of today, 3-way SLI could be an alternative for those looking for uninhibited performance.

”NVIDIA’s new 3-way SLI delivers up to a 2.8x performance increase over a single GPU system, giving high-end gamers 60 frames per second at resolutions as high as 2560×1600 and with 8x antialiasing. 3-way SLI technology means you no longer have to dial back the image quality settings on the newest PC games. For example, gamers with 3-way SLI can play Crysis at high resolutions such as 1920×1600 with all the advanced DirectX 10 effects such as motion blur, ambient occlusion, and soft shadows turned on.”

There aren’t that many review of 3-way SLI out yet, mainly because the 780i chipset hasn’t been launched yet (come Monday), but a couple of sites have published reviews, which clearly shows that there’s potential and a lot of performance to collect under the right circumstances. The question is who is interested and prepared to pay up to $2,000 just for the graphics cards in a system like this. More information on NVIDIA 3-way SLI can be found at NVIDIA’s website.
