SanDisk has launched a series of solid state drives for the notebook segment. The big difference from regular 2.5″ SSD is that the SanDisk SSD G4 and P4 series comes in a whole lot of formfactors.
SanDisk uses tailored formfactors to make the SSDs flexible enough to fit inside practically any computer from OEMs using a its own layouts and solutions. SanDisk’s smallest drives is called SSD P4 mSATA mini and measures mere 26.8 x 30 x 3.4 millimeter.
SanDisk uses MLC NAND flash memory circuits made with 32nm technology for up to 128GB capacity with the SSD P4 series while SSD G4 offers up to 256GB. The latter is also the faster of the two with read and write speeds up to 220 MB/s and 160 MB/s respectively.
SanDisk SSD P4 with its minimal formfactors targets netbooks, smartbooks and ultrathin notebooks. Performance will be up to 600 IOPS at random write of 4K files, but that was all SanDisk revealed in the press release. The drives will become available in Q3 for those looking for an SSD upgrade.
